Project
Carbon turnover in the rhizosphere of deciduous forests with contrasting tree species diversitiy: root turnover and C-transfer to the soil
Project B2 concentrates on the examination of fine root dynamics (growth, mortality, and decomposition) at intraspecific level in a mature forest. Therefore the examinations will be conducted in 8 monospecific tree pairs per 6 tree species in the Hainich forest of Thuringia/Germany. For direct monitoring of the root-growth, there will be installed mini rhizotrons and biomass samples will be taken. In addition mesh-bags with root material will be prepared to determine decomposition rates.

Methods
• Species specific differentiation of roots and root orders
• Mini rhizotrones (rhizoscopy)
• Ingrowth cores
• Litter bags (determination of decomposition rate)
