The University of Göttingen as an Economic Indicator

With its large student population (24 000) and an equally large body of employees (over 10 000), the University is the biggest employer and an important economic factor both for the city and the region around Göttingen. Max-Planck-Institutes, the German Primate Center, and the German Aerospace Center also contribute to its excellent research environment, an environment both research-focused and innovative; both its research focus and its innovative energy find reflection in the region´s economic profile. In and around Göttingen, there are companies specializing in medical technology and biotechnology, mechatronics, optoelectronics, measurement and control technology; many of these companies are global players which had their beginnings within the University. Continued interaction between University and companies as well as a ready supply of excellently trained young experts has contributed to the expansion of some companies and has secured their positions: two examples are Sartorius (Göttingen) and Otto Bock (Duderstadt).
