Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) is one of Germany’s most important tree species, especially in the eastern regions. However, its suitability for future forestry under climate change is the subject of intense debate. While some findings highlight its resilience, others report increasing damage – particularly in response to heat and drought.
This research project investigates the adaptive capacity of Scots pine populations across different regions and environmental conditions. The study focuses on a northeast-southwest gradient in Germany and includes both managed forests and long-established natural pine stands. Using modern genetic and biochemical methods, the project analyzes the physiological diversity and stress responses of different pine populations.
In addition, selected seed orchards are assessed to evaluate the climate resilience of future Scots pine generations.
The findings aim to support a more differentiated evaluation of Scots pine – not as categorically "suitable" or "unsuitable" for climate adaptation, but based on location-specific, genetic, and physiological characteristics. This project contributes to sustainable forest management and the identification of climate-resilient tree species for the future.
