The collaborative project "Genomic Selection for Multiple Adaptive Resistances in Rainbow Trout" (GenSmart)

German trout farming has so far been heavily dependent on imported breeding lines – often with the disadvantage that these are not optimally adapted to local environmental conditions. Our project addresses precisely this issue: Together with our project partners, the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover Foundation, Forellenzucht Grasse GbR, Forellenhof Frank Strecker, and Fischzucht Prexl, we are developing new, disease-resistant, and location-adapted rainbow trout strains that will enable sustainable and future-proof aquaculture.

To this end, we are examining various existing lines with regard to growth and disease resistance, identifying relevant genetic markers, and creating targeted crosses with particularly robust traits. The resulting lines will then be tested in practical field trials.

The project combines state-of-the-art molecular genetic methods, resistance testing, and application-oriented trials. Five partners are working together to translate the scientific findings directly into concrete recommendations for aquaculture – and thus sustainably strengthen the competitiveness of regional businesses, especially in light of climate change.
