With the project liveSciences³, we want to enrich your studies in the life sciences area with international and online study opportunities. Students interested in studying at the University of Göttingen (or those who are already doing a double degree) can take the opportunity to get a taste of studying in Germany. You can also get in touch with fellow students and lecturers before or after your actual exchange. Life science students are invited to take advantage of the opportunity to participate in exciting courses related to sustainability or to improve their skills in important scientific methods.

The Online Courses are part of the international Double Degree as well as Joint Degree study programmes at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Biology and Psychology, or Forest Sciences and Forest Ecology.

Thinking about global challenges such as climate change, sustainable land use, and biodiversity crisis demands an interdisciplinary approach. During the course, the latest insights and different perspectives about global challenges and possible applications of local solutions based on ongoing research projects from around the world will be discussed with the students. The research field of phylogenomics comprises the utilization of genome and transcriptome data for the inference of phylogenetic trees. In this module, students will be introduced to the theoretical and practical knowledge of how to assemble genomes and transcriptomes and their annotation. Moreover, techniques to search for genes in such data will be presented (e.g., BLAST, Hidden Markov models).

In this course, the students gain insight into the functioning of the price mechanism on agricultural markets and into the determinants of market integration. They learn to apply econometric methods to analyse horizontal and vertical prices transmission processes (dynamic models, cointegration, including non-linear and regime-dependent error correction models).

The module deals with the situation in world agricultural markets and the interventions of agricultural and trade interventions of agricultural and trade policy in these markets, based on an introduction to the theory of international trade. The students will learn about the most important models for explaining the international trade of agricultural products. By the end of the course, they are able to expose populist arguments against free trade. They can assess whether there are reasons to deviate from the postulate of free trade in agricultural products, e.g. to reward the positive externalities of agriculture, secure food supplies, prevent ecological and social dumping, or correct distorted world markets for agricultural products.

Contents: Blended learning module; presentation of the most important pests and diseases of the most important tropical crop plants: symptoms, life cycles and plant health management (eg. in rice, maize, cacao, coffee, bananas). Additional crops may be included according to students´ preferences and practical experience. Introduction to relevant international data banks and networks. Use of scientific videos on selected topics of crop protection in the tropics and basic training to create own videos.
Objectives: Students are able to recognize pests and diseases of tropical crops as treated in this course. They critically evaluate scientific and non-scientific publications on crop protection in the tropics. Students are able to create a scientific presentation according to the standards of international conferences and use interactive teaching material; students know the scope and limits of their knowledge in the treated field, they know where to find relevant, reliable information. Registration & Application for students from partner universities

If you are interested in participating in one or more online courses, the matriculation as international exchange student or registration as guest student is required in order to obtain credits. Please contact us as soon as possible! We will be happy to advise you and support your registration!

Courses take place on a regular basis throughout the semester or as a block courses within the semester. The winter term usually starts in October and ends in February and the summer term starts in April and ends in July.

Please note that seats in each course are limited. Thus, we advise you to register early (for winter term courses latest by September, for summer term courses latest by March) to get the chance to participate in the course of your choice!


Requirements

Currently, admission is decided at the faculties that offer the courses. All interested students must be enrolled at least as life sciences students in the fields of agricultural sciences, biology, or forestry (or related).

In addition, proof of sufficient English language skills is required.


English: Applicants who are not native speakers need to provide proof of good knowledge of the English language. The following documents can be accepted as proof of language ability:

  • Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (min. Grade B);
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (min. Grade C);
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (min. 6 Points);
  • Minimum 550 Points in paper-based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language);
  • Minimum 213 Points in computer-based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language);
  • Minimum 80 Points in Internet-based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language);
  • UNIcert level III;
  • C1 certificate of CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference);
  • English speaking course of studies

Fees

We do not charge tuition but there are regular administrative fees, depending on the number of courses and corresponding credits you wish to take.

  • Registration as a guest student for up to 6 ECTS (up to 4 weekly lecture hours): 75€/semester
  • Registration as a guest student for up to 12 ECTS (more than 4 weekly lecture hours): 150€/semester
  • Enrolment as an international exchange student for one semester (i.e. more than 12 ECTS): 325.11€/semester


Credits/ECTS

Students who complete a course including the corresponding exam are eligible to get credits for their achievements and receive a transcript of records from the University of Göttingen. Recognition at your home university cannot be guaranteed.

Please register via Stud.IP. There is no additional fee for the course as it is already included in your semester fee.
