Doctorate at the Faculty of Biology


For the doctorate at the Faculty of Biology the „Gemeinsame Promotionsordnung der Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftlichen Fakultäten der Georg-August-Universität Göttingen“ as amended on 30.06.2009 is applied.

In the following the core prerequisites for the doctorate are listed:


  • Prequisite for admission is a Master- / Diploma- or State examination passed at a German university. Applicants who did not complete a study in nature science at a German university should request a declaration of equivalence at the Faculty of Biology before the beginning of the dissertation and before each following dissertation.

  • The dissertation should be announced at the Faculty of Biology before any experimental work is started with the designated application form. The student should name 3 (2) thesis supervisors, who should agree with the application.

  • The student should be registered for the whole time of the promotion. The experimental work should be complemented by course achievements of at least 20 C.

  • The doctoral thesis should be written in English or German and should cover a research field from the mathematics or nature sciences. It must be an original piece of substantial independent scientific work.

  • The doctoral thesis should be submitted to an examination office of the mat.-nat. faculties at a preassigned date. With the doctoral thesis, the student should submit the following documents (see also § 6 of the promotion regulations):


    • confirmation of the project declaration

    • confirmation of registration

    • confirmation of the course achievements

    • certification of the thesis committee about progress reports

    • list of 3 examiners / co-examiners

    • proposal of 3 fields of research to be subject of the examination
