FORS1 & FORS2, die UV-visuellen Fokal-Reduktor-Spektrographen des ESO/VLT (FORS1 dekommissioniert, FORS2 weiterhin Arbeitspferd[1] am VLT)

Abb.1: Die in der Astrophysik Göttingen entwickelte opto-mechanische Biegekompensation sorgt für eine besonders scharfe und stabile Abbildung (z.B. 'Weak-Lensing' und 'Cosmic Shear' Messungen) der beiden Zwillingsinstrumente, die Fokal Reduktoren und Spektrographen FORS1 (hier am 'Unit Telescope' UT1 im Hintergrund) und FORS2 (im Vordergrund an UT2).
 
 
FORS1 ist als erstes Instrument der '1st Generation' Instrumentierung am ESO/VLT installiert worden und eröffnete mit seinem '1st Light' am 15. Sept. 1998 den wissenschaftlichen Betrieb des Paranal Observatoriums. Neben wissenschaftlich auswertbaren Aufnahmen wurden während des Commissioning auch Photos populärer Himmelsobjekte geschossen, die auf der ESO Webseite öffentlich zugänglich sind.
