Professor Kai Ambos receives Order of merit “Carlos Lemos Simmonds” 2018

(pug) Law Professor Kai Ambos from the University of Göttingen has been awarded the Order of merit “Carlos Lemos Simmonds” for 2018 by the Colombian Press Association and the German Embassy in Bogotá. The award honours his contribution to the peace process in Colombia. It is given to persons who make outstanding contributions to transparency, democracy, German-Colombian friendship and social development.

“This tribute is for those who fight for transparency in companies, in municipalities, in security, each in their own field,” German Ambassador Peter Ptassek said. “I thank you for your commitment to improve this country. You are the heroes of the moment.”

“After almost 30 years working in and on Colombia, I am very grateful to receive this recognition,” Ambos said. “I also consider it as an acknowledgment of my efforts to strengthen the link between research and teaching, especially regarding the creation of the German-Colombian Peace Institute (Instituto Colombo-Alemán para la Paz, CAPAZ) in which also the participation of the University of Göttingen has been crucial.”

In December 2017, Ambos was selected as an international advisor (amicus curiae) to the Colombian Special Jurisdiction for Peace (Jurisdicción Especial para la Paz, JEP). He holds the Chair of Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Comparative Law and International Criminal Law and is the Director of the Centro de Estudios de Derecho Penal y Procesal Penal Latinoamericano (CEDPAL) at the University of Göttingen.
