Major Research Interests

Our group is interested in the structural biology of membrane proteins and membrane-associated proteins such as misfolded proteins that aggregate on biological membranes. We have recently focused on viral ion channels and oligomeric states proteins implicated in neurodegeneration, such as alpha synuclein. We are interested in protein-ligand, protein-lipid, and protein-water interaction, including determination of the chemical structure through measurement of NMR parameters that depend on electronic structure. Our group leads developments in magic-angle-spinning NMR, with a focus on detection of protons. This allows preparations that include lipid bilayers, which is fundamentally important to our goal of understanding the functional states of membrane proteins in near-native conditions.
