Further information on application process
List of required documents- Motivation letter (max. 500 words). Please answer the following questions: Why do you want to become part of this RTG? Why did you choose the respective projects?
- CV including information on posters, presentations, awards and publication list, if applicable
- Certificate and transcript of final secondary-school examination (A-level, Abitur, European Baccalaureate or equivalent)
- Bachelor's degree and transcript
- Master's degree and transcript. If your Master's is not finished yet, upload the transcripts and let us know when you will be finished; successful completion of the MSc or equivalent university degree is mandatory prior to employment.
- English language certificate (see above)
- Publications, if available
- References: names and contact details of two senior academics that know you well. Do not upload reference letters!
Your Master's degree should
- be in the natural sciences or mathematics of at least one year (total study time including the Bachelor's degree at least four years)
- have very good grades (at least 2.5 in the German grading system)
- include a Master's thesis with a minimum duration of six months.
Please note: in the German university system, medical degrees are not considered as equivalent to an MSc in the natural sciences.
Candidates have to be fluent in written and spoken English, confirmed by one of the following certificates (no older than three years), or equivalent. This does not apply if English is your native language.
- Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English - minimum grade B
- Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English - minimum grade C
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) – minimum score 6.0
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (internet-based, TOEFL iBT) – minimum score 80
- CEF (Common European Framework) - at least C1
- UNIcert® Certificate level III
- At least two years of relevant study or professional stay/successful completion of an English-language study program within the three years prior to the application submission
The PhD students will receive their funding as a salary under the German public sector agreement TV-L, pay group E13. The salary will be taxed with the amount being dependent on the individual family status. The net salary will most likely be around 1.900 EUR per month for a 65% position, around 2.100 EUR per month for a 75% position. For additional information and TV-L calculators see here (in German).
