Wireless Communication Technologies

The telematics group conducts mainly researches in the fields of Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs), Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs). Moreover, different types of wireless networks; such as wireless personal area networks (WPANs), wireless local area network (WLAN), Cellular networks and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems; are areas of interest.

Wireless Ad hoc and Sensor Networks

One of our major research areas is the field of ad hoc and sensor networks and their related mechanisms, such as routing protocols, medium access schemes and security protocols. In comparison to cellular networks, ad hoc and sensor networks are more complex because of their resources constrains, dynamic topologies and decentralized network structure. Based on the fact that biologically-inspired algorithms have been successfully applied to a wide range of optimisation problems in various systems, we pursue this idea to extend and adapt biologically-inspired algorithms to suit the requirements in the context of network communication. Our research group has experiences on analysing, designing, adapting and testing these network protocols. We are experienced in simulating network protocols for large scale networks as well as implementing network protocols on real hardware in our dedicated Sensor Lab.

Security

The telematics group investigates particularly in security related issues in various types of communication networks. Of particular interest are security related challenges in network layers below the application layer, such as the network layer and the physical layer. Different security goals are targeted by our research group such as authentication, anonymity and privacy mechanisms. Trust and reputation systems, as soft security mechanism, are one of our major focuses in the field of security. In contrast to hard security mechanisms, in which the security of the system is controlled by a central authority, in trust-based systems security is seen as common task of all network participants. In general, trust and reputation systems provide distributed, autonomous self-healing mechanisms in which the behaviour of attackers can be predicted and consequently prevented. As there are different types of security threats in communication network targeting at different goals, it is important to specify the exact type of attacks. For this purpose the actors in a network and their relations needs to be precisely specified so that possible risks can be assessed and threats can be mitigated. This analysis of network security threats is essential in order to propose and design the proper countermeasures and thus, part of our research.

eTRAP: electronic Text Reuse Acquisition Project

eTRAP (electronic Text Reuse Acquisition Project) is an Early Career Research Group funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The research group, starting on 1st March 2015, was awarded 1.6 million Euros and runs for four years, supporting four full-time researchers and eight student assistants. As the name suggests, this interdisciplinary team studies the linguistic and literary phenomenon that is text re-use with a particular focus on historical languages. More specifically, we look at how ancient authors copied, alluded to, paraphrased and translated each other as they spread their knowledge in writing. This early career research group seeks to provide a basic understanding of the historical text re-use methodology (it being distinct from plagiarism), and so to study what defines text re-use, why some people re-use information, how text is re-used and how this practice has changed over history. We will be investigating text re-use on big data or, in other words, datasets that, owing to their size, cannot be manually processed. The languages we will be working with are Ancient Greek, German, English, Italian and Latin. This research touches upon the fields of Natural Language Processing (NLP), Computational Linguistics, Digital Humanities, Classics, History, Theology and Philology but has also ramifications in Text Visualisation, Manuscript Studies and Bioinformatics, to mention but a few.

MobileCloud:

Nowadays, mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets are quickly becoming the prominent computing and communication platform, which allows billions of people to interact with each other and access to diverse resources and information through wireless networks, efficiently and ubiquitously. The objective of the FP7 funded MobileCloud project (2014-2017) is to provide a stimulating and structured platform for the exchange of researchers and for the joint development of innovative ideas in the emerging areas within mobile cloud computing (and beyond). To achieve this goal, a broad combination of research institutions in Europe and China collaborate together and create a multidisciplinary (cloud computing, mobile computing, telecommunications, computer systems and network optimization) and international (China plus four EU memberstates) environment for an innovative research experience and knowledge exchange in mobile cloud computing. The specific S & T objectives of MobileCloud are to investigate innovative methodologies and approaches to optimize mobile cloud computing resources and satisfy service requirements including energy efficiency and high resource utilization in the emerging cloud computing era.

SWZ: Simulation Science Center Clausthal / Göttingen

Simulation Science Center Clausthal / Göttingen (SWZ) is a common interdisciplinary research facility in simulation science of Clausthal University of Technology and University of Göttingen. The core research areas of the SWZ are on developments in mathematical modeling and simulation techniques as well as general simulation methodology and its real world applications such as simulation and optimization of networks, material simulation, distributed simulation, etc. which requires to develop techniques of modeling, analysis, and design for the particular system that are relevant to that specific discipline. In this context the power of simulation lies in the three R´s of science and engineering, namely: reductionism, repeatability, and refutation. Reductionism recognizes that any system can be decomposed into a set of components that follows fundamental laws of science and engineering. Thus, the diversity of the real world can be reduced into laboratory experiments, which can be validated by their repeatability, and one can make intellectual progress by the refutation of hypothesis. Therefore, modeling and simulation are very important methods in science and engineering and have become a central activity in all disciplines in science and engineering which allow to analyze systems accurately under varying operation conditions and/or scenarios to predict the system behavior before the system is actually built.

MING-T: Multistandard Integrated Network Convergence for Global Mobile and Broadcast Technologies

As we move towards an era of widespread information availability, an effective system of convergence among the new broadcasting technologies, Internet technology, and mobile systems becomes increasingly important. Countries are deploying multiple broadcast technologies; it will remain a key challenge for the industry and user communities to provide a uniform platform to content providers, and convergence is critical to overcoming this challenge. The goal of this EU FP6 IST Specific Targeted Research Project (STREP) is to research, develop, prototype, integrate and validate the interoperability and handover issues of the representative mobile digital broadcast standards developed in China and Europe.
