Keynote: Science, Ethics and Reciprocity: Doing Research with Aspiration?

In 2023, Dr. Olaf Tietje (LMU, München) will give a keynote on ethics and responsibilities.

The question of research ethics refers to the core of science. At least in German-speaking debates, it can happen that scientific objectivity is discussed against principles of research ethics. Again, from the perspective of those who are part of the research is the question of an ethically appropriate way to conduct it, a central element of research. Not only can research results (unintentionally) bring about social change, but they can also have an impact on the lives of the people participating in research. In my lecture, I will pursue the questions of research-ethical implications using some examples from research on migration/mobility and clarify them against their background. To this end, I will show at which points in research ethical questions are particularly evident and what opportunities researchers must deal with them.

Dr. Olaf Tietje works as research associate in the Teaching and Research Area for Qualitative Methods in Empirical Social Research at LMU Munich. His experiences with qualitative research began with a sociological ethnography of practices of migrant rural workers in southern Spain. The resulting dissertation, published in 2018, was the cornerstone for his examination of research-ethical questions. After completing his doctorate, Olaf Tietje worked at the University of Kassel in a research project on welcoming culture and democracy before moving to the LMU Munich in 2020. He is currently researching qualitative methods, social participation and migrantization as well as questions of regulation and governmentality in the context of civic engagement and volunteer work.
