Scientists from China and Germany attend workshop in Shanghai

Universities plan to extend collaboration in the field of computer science and academic exchange

The first Sino-German Workshop on Internet of Things (IoT) was held in Shanghai, China, August 10-14, 2010, under the sponsorship of the Sino-German Center for Research Promotion (www.sinogermanscience.org.cn), the joint center of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). Prof. Dr. Xiaoming Fu of the Institute of Computer Science of the University of Göttingen served as the workshop co-chair from the German side, working together with Prof. Dr. Xiangyang Xue (China side workshop co-chair) and Dr. Jin Zhao (local organization chair) from the School of Computer Science of Fudan University. The MoU between the School of Computer Science of Fudan University and the Institute of Computer Science of the University of Goettingen on further research collaboration and academic exchanges was signed in June 2010, and this workshop strengthened the collaboration between two leading universities in the field of Computer Science and Internet of Things, in addition to bridging both German and Chinese research communities towards establishing several collaboration opportunities.

The workshop attracted more than 50 participants from both China and Germany, including 14 senior experts from the University of Goettingen, MPI for Dynamics and Selforganization, Technical University of Darmstadt, Technical University of Berlin, University of Kaiserslautern, University of Paderborn and HAW Hamburg from Germany, as well as more than 40 senior experts from Fudan University, Nanjing University, Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Tongji University, Shanghai University, Chinese Academy of Science Institute of Computing Technology, and Shanghai Engineering Research Center for Broadband Technologies as well as Shanghai Research Center for Wireless Communications from China.

Prof. Fu, Dr. Benjamin Zeiss (Institute of Computer Science) and Dr. Omar Alfandi, and Prof. Dr. Otto Rienhoff (Medical School) from the University of Goettingen as well as Dr. Jan Nagler from MPI-DS/University of Goettingen presented their visions and latest advances on various fields of IoT, and had fruitful discussions with other workshop participants. Upon the invitation of Nanjing University, Prof. Fu and Prof. Rienhoff also visited Nanjing University after the workshop and discussed extensively various research collaboration opportunities, especially the planned DFG International Research Training Group between Nanjing and Goettingen. An MoU between Nanjing University and the University of Goettingen on expanding the collaboration in the field of Information and Communication Technology, Sociology and Medical was signed during the Göttingen China week in July 2010, establishing the basis for this new collaboration. Multiple researchers and faculty members from both universities related to this work have been visiting each other multiple times since the middle of 2009.
