New Master’s Programme: Intercultural Theology

The new Master’s programme Intercultural Theology begins in the 2009/2010 Winter Semester.

This programme enables students to conduct in-depth scholarly work with regard to theologically-responsible practice within intercultural and inter-religious communication and educational processes. The participating students come form all over the world, this year from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Ethiopia, South Korea and Germany. All of them have completed their religious studies and some even work as clergy. The language of the programme is English, and one semester of the two year study programme has to be spent at a partner university.

In this international and intercultural programme, the students learn to analyse and understand the transcultural character and diversity in the practice of Christianity. They study how to communicate the Gospel in the context in which they live, and learn to reflect the interaction of Christians with people of other religions, as well as analysing the theological, social, political and economical conditions of (inter)cultural transformation processes.

The international mixture of students as well as the mandatory stay abroad at a partner university emphasize the intercultural educational process. It promotes communication and cognitive abilities within this context. Students will work on a concrete project during their stay abroad in which they will emphasize the application of scientific findings.

The programme is offered in cooperation with the Missionsseminar Hermannsburg and with partner universities in Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Lebanon and South Africa, among others.

The degree qualifies graduates for fields of occupation in ecumenical institutions, churches in Germany and abroad, church communions (World Council of Churches, Luther World Federation) as well as for work in non-governmental organisations, media, institutions of adult education and academic institutions.
