Göttingen University announces student numbers and three new degree programmes
At least 5,000 students have enrolled for the 2025/26 winter semester at Göttingen University, including the University Medical Centre Göttingen (UMG). Of these, 3,600 are enrolled in their first semester at a German university. The total number of first-time enrolments has remained roughly the same as last year. The total number of students currently stands at around 27,700. Up to 28,000 students are expected over the course of the semester – roughly the same as last year. The proportion of international students has risen again and is now 18.5 percent, up from 17 percent last year.
“We are delighted with the consistently high level of interest in our range of courses and warmly welcome all students, especially those newly enrolled for the 2025/26 winter semester,” says University President Professor Axel Schölmerich. “The large number of international students shows the excellent standing of Göttingen University around the world.”
Similar to last year, the degree programmes with the most students in their first semester are currently Law, and Business Administration – with around 420 new students – followed by Forest Sciences, and Agricultural Sciences – which have around 180 first-year students each. The larger cohorts of between 100 and 200 first-semester students are based in many areas, including medicine, business informatics, social sciences, psychology, physics, biology, and the teaching subjects German and English.
The University of Göttingen currently offers a total of 97 undergraduate programmes, of which three are new this year. These include the three-year degree programme in Intercultural Theology which is in English. It teaches about Christianity in various cultural and religious contexts worldwide. Another new addition is the four-year degree programme in Interdisciplinary Physics. This programme, taught in German at the Physics Faculty, is unique in Germany, and enables students to choose a second subject in addition to physics. Thirdly, the part-time programme in Practice-Oriented Nursing Science, taught in German, is also offered for first time in the winter semester 2025/26.
