As one of its founding faculties, the Faculty of Theology has been an integral part of the University of Basel for 560 years, allowing it to look back on a long tradition of theological teaching and research. Today, the Faculty of Theology is a small but vibrant faculty that lives from all those who study and work in it.

The faculty with its Reformed character offers all the classical disciplines of theology (Old and New Testament, Church History, Practical Theology, Dogmatics and Ethics). The field of Old Testament in particular is characterized by the continuing tradition of Semitic studies in Basel. Furthermore, students can also immerse themselves in the subject areas of Non-European Christianity; Religion, Economics, Politics; Religious Studies and Jewish Studies. Languages, literature, history and the present are the focus of research and teaching. With the Karl Barth Center for Reformed Theology, the legacy of the great 20th century theologian, who himself lived and taught in Basel for many years, is studied and reappraised for the present.

The Faculty of Theology at the University of Geneva is the largest institution dedicated to the study of Christian theology in the Protestant French speaking world. Its roots date back to the founding of Geneva’s Academy by the famous reformer John Calvin in 1559.

Although rooted in the Reformed branch of the reformation, the Faculty of Theology is open to plurality which characterizes the world of today. In the face of growing religious fanaticism, the Faculty highly values a critical theological reflection on the world and humanity, as well as the Hebrew and Christian Bible.

The beginnings of theological science in Zurich and the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies go back to the founding of the so-called "Prophezey" in 1525 by Huldrych Zwingli, the great reformer from Switzerland. The Prophezey was a training center for reformed preachers. Today, the faculty trains not only theologians but also scholars of religious studies and focuses on many different religions as well as other religious and spiritual phenomena in contemporary society. Religion and spirituality are viewed and studied from a historical, contemporary and global perspective.

Studies at the Theological Seminary offer comprehensive insights into the Bible and its origins, the history and development of Christianity and what a reformed Christianity might look like, as well as questions about the understanding and role of the church in the present. Religious studies not only examines the various religions in the world, but also religious phenomena in a wide variety of contexts in the past and present.
