The Collaborative Research Centre 990 / CRC 990 (http://www.uni-goettingen.de/EFForTS/) at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen is offering the position of a

Doctoral researcher (all genders welcome)

in the Scientific Project B10 “Landscape-level assessment of ecological and socioeconomic functions of rainforest transformation systems in Sumatra (Indonesia)” at the Ecosystem Modelling department.

The position will be limited to 3 years and should be filled as soon as possible. Salary: The salary is in accordance with the German public service salary scale TV-L E13 (65 %), which corresponds to 25.87 working hours per week.

Your duties
The project aims at understanding the mechanisms underlying the trade-offs and synergies of ecological and socioeconomic functions in tropical landscapes, taking former rainforest landscapes that have been largely transformed into agricultural plantation systems (oil palm, rubber) as an example. The goal is to identify policy scenarios and landscape characteristics that increase ecosystem services and biodiversity, while having minimal impact on the economic benefits. This will be achieved by refining and analysing EFForTS-ABM, an integrated ecological-economic land-use change model (see Dislich et al. (2018) PLOS ONE 13: e0190506). EFForTS-ABM is coded in NetLogo, additional software is coded in R.

Your tasks will be the following:
• Conducting a comprehensive analysis of trade-offs and synergies between economic indicators and biodiversity of different taxa at the landscape scale.
• Utilization of LiDAR data to scale the model to larger regions
• Presentation and publication of research results

Your Profile
• You hold a Master degree in ecology, forestry, environmental sciences, or a related field
• have excellent knowledge of ecological modelling, programming, and statistics
• are experienced in programming and analysis of simulation models (preferentially using R and NetLogo)
• are willing to visit the study sites in Indonesia
• are willing to collaborate with scientists of other disciplines within the Collaborative Research Centre
• are proficient in English.
