Details Why does clothing matter in art history? This lecture explores the representation, materiality, and cultural significance of clothing in artworks, tracing its evolution from traditional costume studies to the modern intersections of dress, fashion, and material culture. Drawing on Roland Barthes' distinction between real, written, and depicted clothing, the talk examines how depictions of clothing construct meaning beyond mere representation. Additionally, inspired by Ann-Sophie Lehmann's theories on materiality, the lecture highlights how the physical properties and artistic processes behind clothing depictions shape our understanding of their impact.
