Dreissenid mussels: the resilience and success of an invasive species

Zebra and quagga mussels, which belong to the Dreissenid family, are freshwater invasive species widespread throughout western Europe and North America. They present a significant danger to native ecosystems by competing for resources. Using a fibrous anchor called a byssus, Dreissenid mussels also cause biofouling by attaching persistently to underwater surfaces and for example block the intakes of power stations and water treatment plants. more…
Urbanization increases seasonal differences in plant-pollinator networks

Increasing urbanization worldwide is a growing threat to biodiversity. At the same time, flowering plants are often more diverse in cities than in the countryside. This is due to flowering plants and agricultural crops, which are increasingly being grown in cities. Influential and highly cited

Lutz Ackermann, Professor of Chemistry at the University of Göttingen, has again been recognised as one of the most influential and most cited scientists in the world. A ranking by Stanford University in the USA lists the researcher in first place in Germany and sixth place worldwide in his research field of organic chemistry. In the ranking for all subjects, Ackermann was in seventh place in Germany. The selection is based on the top 100,000 scientists and the top two per cent in each primary research field. more…
Göttingen University’s Humboldt Research Award winner

The physicist Professor Martin Schmaltz from Boston University has received a Humboldt Research Award. Schmaltz has been a visiting researcher at the Institute for Theoretical Physics since August 2023, where he has worked with Professor Laura Covi and her research group "High Energy Physics and Cosmology". His research focuses on the interface between cosmology and particle physics and the question of how dark matter and dark radiation can be unified and modelled theoretically. more…

Preliminary results of the DFG Review Board election 2023
According to the preliminary results of the DFG Review Board election 2023, ten researchers from the University of Göttingen and four researchers from the University Medical Center Göttingen have been elected for the term of office from 2024 to 2028. The review boards review and evaluate proposals to the DFG and thus ensure that proposals are assessed according to uniform standards across all programs. more…
New research centre for artificial intelligence in medicine
Improving healthcare while promoting personalised medicine: The new research centre CAIMed for artificial intelligence (AI) and causal methods in medicine will be established in Lower Saxony. Computer scientists and medical researchers from Hannover, Göttingen and Braunschweig will develop innovative methods and applications in the field of artificial intelligence. The Ministry of Science and Culture and the Volkswagen Foundation will contribute 15 million euros of funding provided over the next five years. more…
