In-depth research in cell analysis with Artificial Intelligence

Sartorius funds new endowed junior professorship at the University of Göttingen

Sartorius will sponsor a new laboratory for cell analysis using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and endow a junior professorship for Computational Cell Analytics at the University of Göttingen. The laboratory is located at the Campus Institute Data Science (CIDAS), where the focus of the new chair’s research will also sit. Furthermore, Sartorius will equip the laboratory with additional technical equipment. A strategic partnership between Sartorius and the University of Göttingen has existed since 2014; Sartorius is an Associate Partner of the Göttingen Campus, the association of ten scientific institutions in Göttingen.

Sartorius is endowing this professorship to further strengthen and focus the University of Göttingen's special scientific excellence in this field. "We are convinced that advances in this field will enable faster identification of disease mechanisms and faster development of drugs and thus contribute to medical progress," says Dr Joachim Kreuzburg, CEO of Sartorius. "We also want to promote translation in this field, ie the transfer of new research results into innovative, commercially usable technologies, and therefore see spin-offs in this field as another realistic goal for this endowed chair.”

"Sartorius' commitment gives us the opportunity to develop our research in the field of data science and artificial intelligence and to provide our students with excellent, state-of-the-art training in this area," says University President Professor Reinhard Jahn. "The endowed professorship complements the digitisation professorships funded by the State as well as the professorships that we have established in the field of data science with our own funds in recent years.”

The University founded CIDAS in 2019 to coordinate research, teaching and infrastructure in the field of data sciences and to further develop the collaboration between the University and its partners across the Göttingen Campus at the interface between computer science, mathematics, statistics and a variety of other applied disciplines. With the concentration of academics and activities at a campus institute, the University has already succeeded, together with the HAWK, in acquiring eleven of the digitisation professorships funded by the State of Lower Saxony. The cooperation with Sartorius expands CIDAS to open up opportunities in Göttingen with the University Medical Centre, Computer Science and Physics. The new laboratory will also be open to other partners of the Göttingen Campus for research in the field of AI-based cell analysis.
