Quality assessment of indonesia specialty coffee bean using near infra red

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages consumed worldwide. Primarily two species of coffee are available commercially, Arabica and Robusta. Arabica coffee generally has a higher price than Robusta coffee since its beans have a more pronounced and finer flavor than Robusta beans. Due to this price difference, there is a tendency of adulterating Arabica with Robusta coffee bean. Therefore, as far as mislabeling or eventual fraudulence are concerned, it is important to identify and classification the bean variety. In today’s marketplace coffee identification and classification is as crucial to cup quality as it is to consumer requirement for origin and species specification. In order to obtain top market prices, methods of efficient, inexpensive, and highly accurate identification of coffee origins and characteristics are needed. Near infrared (NIR) will fulfill these requirements.
Indonesia as a coffee exporter country has several geographical indication or specialty coffee. Some of them are famous in the world such as Mandheling and Java Coffee, and Civet-Cat Coffee (Kopi Luwak) the expensive one, maybe most expensive coffee in the world. There are several other specialty coffee in Indonesia and through this paper it will be assesment it’s origin and quality. There are need to develop an instrument to prevent adulteration about coffee origin and quality. There are several way to assignment coffee quality, one of them is using Near Infrared Reflectance (NIR) device. The experiments will conduct in several phase.
