| Details | 21 May marks the end of the Russo-Caucasian War (1763 to 1864) and is observed as the Day of Remembrance of the Adyghe (Circassian) People. That war between the Russian Empire and the peoples of the North Caucasus led to the forced removal of thousands from their historic homelands and to a genocide that present-day Russian authorities have yet to acknowledge. Since 2014 Ored Recordings, founded by Bulat Khalilov and Timur Kodzoko, has researched, documented and curated projects in the traditional and local music of the North Caucasus. Both organisers are research associates at the Institute of Cultural Anthropology / European Ethnology and CeMig. With support from these institutions they are organising a listening session that will showcase a broad spectrum of Circassian music, from early twentieth-century archival recordings to creative reinterpretations by contemporary artists, and provide historical context. The programme will explore which songs emerged during the Russo-Caucasian War, how Soviet policies affected the Adyghe people and the current state of Circassian traditional music. This event and the ongoing work of Ored Recordings are financed by the Right Livelihood Foundation. |
