Kyle Mason-Jones

PhD student

Kyle joined the Department of Agricultural Soil Science from a background in chemistry, biochemistry and sustainability science.

His research explores the mechanisms of the rhizosphere priming effect, the destabilising effect that organic substances from plant roots can have on organic matter that is already present in the soil. His work places particular emphasis on the relatively short-term dynamics occurring within days and weeks after a change in soil carbon status. Isotopic labelling is used in parallel with various analytical techniques to gather evidence of the underlying microbial mechanisms.

Kyle tutors in the Molecular Ecosystems Studies undergraduate course.
