Title: New approaches to image macromolecules

X-ray crystallography has been used to determine the atomic arrangements of compounds for well over 100 years. But X-ray free-electron lasers bring exciting new possibilities to obtain the structures of large biological complexes at atomic resolution, overcoming issues with radiation damage and signal levels. I will discuss some new approaches that we are developing, including using the “single molecule” scattering from disordered crystals and utilising the more abundant incoherently scattered radiation for atomic-resolution imaging.
