Academic Writing in Multilingual Contexts

Studying - and especially writing - in multiple languages brings not only challenges but also opportunities. This is exactly where the MultiConText programme of the International Writing Lab comes in.

MultiConText supports multilingual students through workshops and individual writing consultations. Our focus is on integrating your existing linguistic and academic experiences, making them usable for your current writing projects.
The MultiConText approach is grounded in multilingual writing pedagogy, see Barczaitis et al. 2022.
This means: Your diverse languages, academic backgrounds, and writing traditions are explicitly welcome. We support you in developing strategies that suit your needs and in turning your multilingualism into a valuable resource.

Multilingualism is lived in diverse ways within MultiConText: Workshops are conducted in German and/or English, and other languages can be used at any time. For assignments and consultations, different languages are also possible upon agreement.

Who can participate? Students from all faculties, for example if you

  • study entirely or partially in a foreign language,
  • use multiple languages during writing, reading, and reflection,
  • work with literature in multiple languages,
  • bring multiple languages with you based on your personal background.

    • What services are offered?

  • Individual Writing Consultations: Here, you can discuss your writing processes and, if needed, excerpts from your texts in a safe and supportive environment.
  • Workshops: You will get to know strategies for academic writing and exchange experiences with other participants.

    • In which languages are the services offered?

  • Workshops: primarily in German and/or English, with materials available in both languages. All other languages brought by participants are welcome and encouraged to be used during workshops.
  • Writing consultations: available in German, English or - upon agreement - in other languages.
  • Assignments: typically in German and/or English; other languages are possible if discussed and approved with the workshop leaders.

    • Will I receive credits in the workshops? In most workshops you can earn credits, which can usually be recognized in your key competencies area. Please check your examination regulations for details.
