“Stammtisch”: Informal exchange with colleagues reflecting on ethics and security of field research (GGG) in presence

Target group:
PhD students who are interested in ethics concerning field work

Schedule:
07.09.2023, 6pm - open end

Venue: VG 4.102
Target group: beginners and advanced learners

Outline:
You are planning a field research project and would like to learn from the experience of others?
You already did a field research project and would like to share your experience or reflect upon it?

Social sciences often rely on primary data collection and in certain disciplines PhD projects regularly entail or build on a primary data collection, often in countries of the Global South. Recent discussions have shown that primary data collection in general but especially in countries often comes with ethical dilemmas, but also with security challenges. These issues are often not covered in the academic coursework. When preparing for an own primary data collection, there are many organizational and academic questions to deal with and thus issues of ethics and security are sometimes not sufficiently considered. Also, when returning from field work, the many tasks often do not leave space for reflection.

We, a group of PhD students from the Faculty of Business and Economics, would like to create a space for reflecting and discussing issues of ethics and securities during field work with colleagues and invite you to an informal gathering on 07.09.23. We will meet at 6pm in VG 4.102. Afterwards, we will go for dinner/drinks with everyone interested. If you are interested to join the meeting, please sign up here, ideally until 01.09.23.
