What You Will Study
The Two-Subject Bachelor's degree in Computer Science teaches students the academic foundations and methods of computer science combined with another subject area. Because many different subject combinations are possible, it is especially suitable for connecting computer science with a humanities or social science subject.
This is particularly meaningful because the impact of information technology on society can hardly be overstated. How can the public be made more aware of data protection on the internet? What ethical consequences does research in artificial intelligence have? How can citizens' fundamental rights be protected in the age of NSA revelations?
Through its interdisciplinary character, the Two-Subject Bachelor's degree in Computer Science provides a basis for cross-disciplinary discussion of these important questions. But it is not only the impact of computer science on society that is interesting: the possibilities of information-technology applications in the humanities and social sciences, for example in text analysis, also offer new research potential.
Programme Structure
The Two-Subject Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) Computer Science plus X is an undergraduate degree programme in which 180 ECTS must be completed successfully in six semesters. In addition to computer science, a second subject is chosen and studied on equal terms. The programme consists of the three study areas Subject Studies, Professionalisation Area, and Bachelor's Thesis. The general language of instruction is German.
Subject Studies
In the subject studies area, computer science and a second subject are studied equally, with 66 ECTS in each. Students acquire foundational knowledge in both computer science and the second subject.
Professionalisation Area
In the professionalisation area, students can choose a study profile that matches their individual and subject-specific interests and career goals, while acquiring key skills for further study or professional practice.
One of the following study profiles can be chosen in the professionalisation area:
- Academic Profile
- Career-Oriented Profile
- Teacher-Training Profile
- "Studium Generale" Profile
The study profiles differ in the selection of module packages.
Academic Profile: A module package from computer science or the second subject, plus freely selectable modules from the permitted range.
Career-Oriented Profile: A career-oriented module package plus freely selectable modules from the permitted range.
Teacher-Training Profile: Subject didactics, educational science modules, and key competences.
"Studium Generale" Profile: Any freely selectable modules from the permitted range.
Bachelor's Thesis
After successfully completing all modules in the subject studies as well as the required modules in the professionalisation area, students can write their bachelor's thesis either in computer science or in their second subject to complete the degree.
Two-Subject Bachelor's Degree for Teacher Training
Students who are aiming for a teaching career can study computer science plus a second subject. In this case, the teacher-training profile is chosen, which includes subject-didactic modules, educational science modules, and key competences.
Second Subject
An overview of all subjects that can be studied within the Two-Subject Bachelor's degree can be found on the University of Göttingen's Subjects A-Z website. When choosing the second subject, it is worth considering which professional fields the combination may be useful for and which master's degree programmes can build on it.
Digital Humanities
If you are interested in Digital Humanities, the Two-Subject Bachelor's degree "Computer Science plus Humanities/Social Science" is an especially suitable option. This subject combination provides a foundation for the application of computer-based methods and for the systematic use of digital resources in the humanities and social sciences.
At present, Digital Humanities in Göttingen focuses on the research areas of archaeology and text, especially linguistics and literary studies. Successful study within the academic profile allows students to continue into the Applied Computer Science (M.Sc.) degree programme with the Digital Humanities specialisation.

Subject-Specific Background
Anyone wishing to study the Two-Subject Bachelor's degree in Computer Science plus X does not need to be a maths genius or a computer expert. A basic interest in mathematical-logical thinking and practical ways of working is enough. The ability to work in a team is an important prerequisite for later professional life. No special prior subject knowledge is required, especially not in programming. Genuine interest in the second subject is also important.
