eLearning courses offered by the Department of Ecoinformatics

In recent years, numerous eLearning learning modules have been developed in the fields of GIS, statistics, spreadsheets and databases in the Ecoinformatics Department and offered to students as additional learning opportunities via StudIP/ILIAS. The eLearning modules consist of explanatory videos, texts and exercises with solutions. They can be used independent of time and place, improve the possibilities for self-determined and flexible learning and can thus contribute to a deeper understanding of content and a higher learning success of the students.

These online learning units are, on the one hand, a curricular component of our courses for forest students and, in addition to existing classroom exercises, form a supplementary learning offer, e.g. within the module "Applied Computer Science and GIS for Forest Sciences".

On the other hand, we offer numerous self-study modules in the StudIP study area "University offers for self-study" to all students of the University of Göttingen. These self-study modules have no curricular connection and no time limit. They offer assistance especially for advanced students, ERASMUS students or doctoral students who would like to use statistical or GIS software for a specific problem but do not have the time to attend courses during the semester.

Further eLearning offers of the department, which are available to the public and not only for Göttingen students, can be found, so far as at test, on the OpenILIAS platform of the university under the category "Faculty of Forest Sciences and Forest Ecology".

In addition to the above-mentioned asynchronous online learning offerings (WebBasedTrainings), our department has extensive experience with so-called synchronous online learning offerings such as web conferences. This allows teaching content with fast communication possibilities and application sharing to be communicated interactively and adapted to modern constructivistic learning principles. One example would be the so-called Learning-by-Teaching. The recording of conferences offers the opportunity to recall what has been learned in context at any time.

Further information on the eLearning offerings of other departments of the Faculty of Forest Sciences can be found on the Faculty's eLearning page. If you have any questions regarding the use of these eLearning courses, please contact Dr. Wilfried Hakes, Department of Ecoinformatics, Biometrics and Forest Growth (whakes@gwdg.de).
