Initially founded in 1878 as the first Indian Forest School by the German-British botanist Sir Dietrich Brandis, from 1906 the Forest Research Institute (FRI) established itself as one of the leading institutions for forestry in India and beyond. Today, the centre covers an area of over 500 hectares and is located near the city of Dehradun in northern India in the immediate vicinity of the Himalayas.

The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) was founded in 2006 in Kolkata and is therefore a young university. It is one of seven Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research und was the first of the IISERs to be established along with IISER Pune. It has since performed very well in national quality rankings. It is considered one of India's leading institutes in terms of research output and has been ranked 5th in the country by Nature Index (compiled by Nature Research).
