(65 % E13 TV-L, limited contract of 3 years, earliest starting date February 1, 2024) in physical organic chemistry at Göttingen University. In this project, the PhD candidate will focus on understanding the way how solvation influences chemical reactivity. For this purpose, a series of model reactions will be probed in the complete absence of solvent (gas phase), in the presence of individual solvent molecules (micro-solvated systems in the gas phase), and in bulk solution. The experiments will make use of a combination of different methods, including state-of-the-art multi-stage mass-spectrometry and gas-phase chemistry. The obtained results then will be compared to the predictions of quantum chemical calculations.
The PhD studies will be embedded in the Research Training Group BENCh (Benchmark experiments for numerical quantum chemistry), which will offer a stimulating scientific environment at the interface of modern physical, organic, and quantum chemistry. Your profile
• You hold (or are in the process of concluding) a Master's degree in Chemistry.

The Institute for Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen is looking to fill the position of a

in the German Research Foundation (DFG)-funded Research Training Group 2455 “BENCh – Benchmark Experiments for Numerical Quantum Chemistry”.
This position should ideally be filled by May 2023 with a contract initially limited to three years. The regular working hours will be 25.87 hours per week, and the salary corresponds to the E13 TV-L (65%) level. The position is affiliated with the group of Jun.-Prof. Dr. Nadja Simeth (https://www.uni-goettingen.de/en/649877.html). The young lab works at the interface of physical and organic chemistry and focuses on incorporating biomolecules in chemical, biohybrid, and biomimetic systems.
The prospective candidate will design and synthesize various photoswitches and investigate their properties spectroscopically and in silico, in collaboration with groups affiliated with the BENCh Research Training Group (RTG). The BENCh RTG consists of a high-level research programme aiming to provide landmark experiments for quantum chemical methods benchmarking. The students in the program will benefit from a wide variety of lab techniques and collaborations for challenging experiments. - have some experience in data processing and analysis,
- ideally have some experience in optical spectroscopy and/or organic photochemistry and/or DFT calculations
- be creative, and curious in acquiring new techniques

The Suhm group focuses on the experimental characterization of molecules and molecular aggregates at low temperatures by unique slit jet recycling Raman and FTIR spectrometers, with the goal to benchmark numerical methods for their electronic structure and nuclear motion. In the proposed project, stepwise hydration of organic molecules will be used to train and test theoretical methods for the description of the hydration process. Postdoc position

In the proposed project, environmental effects in supersonic jets including stepwise solvation and excitation will be probed for selected prototype systems to rigorously test theoretical approaches for noncovalent interactions and dynamics.

The BENCh Research Training Group focusses on the interplay of molecular experiments and state-of-the-art simulation methods, including groups from all three chemistry institutes on our campus (Physical, Inorganic, and Biomolecular and Organic). The Faculty of Chemistry wishes to appoint a

Junior Professor (W1) in Physical Chemistry

to commence as soon as possible, by preference early in 2020.

The professorship is linked to a recently awarded DFG research training group (RTG 2455) – “Benchmark experiments for numerical quantum chemistry” (BENCh). Membership in the RTG is offered until June 2023 as well as one DFG-funded Ph.D. student position (65% E13) for 3 years, subject to application at and approval by the DFG.

Research should focus on experimental structure determination in the gas phase aiming towards the rigorous benchmarking of quantum chemical tools. Cooperation opportunities with local gas phase vibrational characterization and solid state structure determination efforts are offered, as is intense collaboration with local and external theory groups. Participation in other ongoing or planned research collaborations of the Faculty is welcome. The teaching duties include physical chemistry courses for chemistry majors, doctoral and other students.

The junior professor is expected to participate in the academic administration and to apply actively for external funding, including participation in the RTG funding extension proposal in 2022.

The requirements of appointment are specified by § 30 of the "Niedersächsisches Hochschulgesetz" (NHG). In case you have been employed as a scientific employee, or scientific teaching assistant, before or after receiving the Ph.D. degree, the total time of employment and Ph.D. studies should not exceed 6 years. The appointment is for three years, with a possible extension for a further three years depending on a positive evaluation. The Stiftungsuniversität Göttingen has the right to make this appointment. PhD position: Vibrational spectroscopy meets theory

A call was open for 1 Ph.D. position (3 years, 65% E13 TV-L) on the topic of vibrational spectroscopy of molecules in a controlled environment. The application deadline was 01.03.2019.




Bench Project IQuantum chemistry is best at calculating isolated molecules at 0 K. Chemists like to study them with some thermal excitation, embedded in a solvent. We aim to provide bridges between these two worlds. Supersonic jet spectroscopy offers rigorous answers for well-defined partial problems such as stepwise solvation and mode-selective thermal excitation. In this project, interesting model systems are put under spectroscopic scrutiny by adding weak solvent perturbations and by exciting selected vibrational modes. Weak hydrogen bonding, vibrational mode coupling and shock heating will be explored to tame the complexity of environmentally influenced molecules and to benchmark both electronic structure and nuclear dynamics theory.

The BENCh Research Training Group (BENCh RTG) consists of a high-level research programme aiming to provide landmark experiments for quantum chemical methods benchmarking. The topics will span from gas phase spectrometry, molecular beam techniques, synthesis to X-ray diffraction. A strong connection between theoretical chemistry and experiment builds the core for the projects. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to develop a research plan under the general topic of theory development and modelling in close connection with one or more of the research projects funded in the initiative. The latter should be a stepping stone for third-party funding applications and establishment of an independent research group in accordance with the Faculty’s career development plan. • are experienced in the synthesis of highly air sensitive coordination compounds using Schlenk techniques and gloveboxes,
• are familiar with spectroscopic methods to characterize molecules and to elucidate their electronic structures (see below).

The successful applicant will be involved in the study of 3d single molecule magnets with unusual coordination geometries and with targeted variations in structure, metal-ligand covalency etc., translating into tunable variations of the magnetic anisotropy. The project involves the design and multi-step synthesis of ligands, synthetic coordination chemistry with air highly sensitive compounds and the application of various analytical and spectroscopic methods including SQUID magnetometry, EPR and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The project also involves close collaboration with theory partners, specifically with groups at the Max Planck Institutes in Mülheim.

The Siewert group focuses on electrochemistry, catalysis and small molecule activation using coordination compounds. In the proposed project, the student synthesizes and characterizes new coordination compounds with proton responsive ligands and determines their spectroscopic and thermochemical properties for benchmarking. Ideally, the candidate has a strong background in synthetic inorganic chemistry and is willing to learn high-level theory in collaboration with the project partners. First experience in electrochemistry are beneficial.
