Sustainable Trout Aquaculture Intensification (SusTAIn)

The SusTAIn project, funded by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture (MWK), involves the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at the University of Göttingen and the Institute of Parasitology at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover. The work package being carried out by our group focuses on investigating genetic variability in trout with regard to their adaptation to new protein sources in feed. This is of great importance because fishmeal is still used in the diet of carnivorous fish such as trout. Substituting it with plant-based products or insects would enable significantly more sustainable trout production.

A Chance for the Grayling...
The grayling is the flagship species and namesake of an entire water region in the Weser area, the so-called Grayling Region. Unfortunately, it is now among the most endangered species. In a species conservation project, the Einbeck Fishing Club, together with the Anglers' Association of Lower Saxony, a local fish farmer, and the University of Göttingen, is attempting to create a locally genetically adapted breeding stock for later stocking with juvenile fish. However, much remains unclear regarding the reproduction, husbandry, and feeding of the grayling. The working group has been supporting the project for three years and is hatching young grayling in the department's facilities.
