Beschreibung The Kibble-Zurek mechanism describes the evolution of topological defects like monopoles, grain boundaries, and vortices when a system is forced through a continuous phase transition. Originally developed by Tom Kibble for the symmetry breaking of the primordial Higgs field (nowadays called Inflaton) to describe the formation of monopoles, Wojciech Zurek applied it to quantum fluids like suprafluid Helium to describe the formation of vortices. In this webinar I present the scaling laws for a colloidal monolayer which follows the prediction of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism when adopted for the Kosterlitz-Thouless universality (Nobel-Prize 2016 for 2D melting).
