Transdisciplinarity in Practice

The research Project “Diversity turn in land use science: The importance of social diversity for sustainable land use in vanilla production”

Transdisciplinarity is key when we want to approach complex societal challenges. The concept has become increasingly popular over the last three decades. Initially it strongly focused on questions related to the theory of science. Recently, a more pragmatic approach has been coining transdisciplinary research projects (in Germany). Yvonne will present the research question(s), conceptual framework and some (preliminary) first insights of the research project “Diversity turn in land use science: The importance of social diversity for sustainable land use innovation”. She will discuss the potentials of researching closer to societal needs, generating more and sustainable impact and outcome. And she will scrutinize the pitfalls of reproduction of hierarchies, involvement of non-academic actors as mere token etc.. This then provides the backdrop for examining the strengths and weaknesses of transdisciplinary research projects in general.
