Beschreibung | The focus of the talk is on swimming at small scales. While in Newtonian fluids much is known about swimming at low Reynolds numbers, the understanding is still at its infancy in fluids that are not Newtonian. In the talk, we show that the presence of shear-thinning viscosity and viscoelasticity, two non-Newtonian fluid properties common to many biological fluids, results in swimming dynamics that is qualitatively different to that in Newtonian fluids. We also present the possibility of sorting microswimmers based on their response to simple viscosity gradients in the fluid. |
