Best Practices in IT Innovation Management (ADL)

Partner: Arthur D. Little

Project duration: 01/2010 – 06/2011

Methods: Survey, case studies, expert interviews

Description and results:

IT organizations / departments are always in a fundamental tension between the need to make IT more efficient and to provide an innovative IT. Spending on IT innovations in percentage of the IT budget decreased from 30% in the year 2000 to 14% in 2009. Instead of investing in new work, experimentation and innovation, IT organizations spend more and more resources on legacy systems to keep the business running.
Is the amount of money spend on innovations the key factor for successful IT innovations? If not, what differentiates good IT innovators and low performers? The project aims to identify best practices in IT innovation management conducting a cross-industry survey and case studies.
