Curriculum vitae (abridged version)

Born in Göttingen, Markus Hoppe studied business management at the Georg-August-Universität from 1988 to 1993. During his years of study, he was active as chair of the General Student Council, as student member on the board of Student Services and as tutor at the Institute for Industrial and Social Psychology. From 1990 to 1993 he was a member of staff of Thomas Oppermann, Member of the State Parliament of Lower Saxony. After graduating, Markus Hoppe became manager of the Hanover District SPD [German Social Democratic Party] and then in 1997 executive assistant for Economics, Technology and Traffic in the State Chancellery of Lower Saxony, where he went on to become executive assistant to Prime Minister Gerhard Schröder in 1997/98. At the end of 1998 Markus Hoppe moved to the Ministry for Science and Culture of Lower Saxony where he initially headed the Department for Media and Public Relations, until assuming direction of the Department for Medium-Term Financial Planning and Budget Management in the autumn of 1999.
