Press release: University of Göttingen student numbers hardly changed

Despite losing a cohort of school leavers this year, degree programmes had to limit admissions due to the huge demand for places

At the start of the 2020/2021 winter semester, 4,800 new students have so far enrolled at the University of Göttingen. 3,300 of them find themselves registering for their first ever semester at a German university. The total number of students is only slightly lower than in the previous year and, at the start of the semester, at just under 30,000, remains roughly on a par with last year. The proportion of international students currently stands at 14 percent and female students make up just under 53 percent of the total number of students.

"Despite the missing cohort of school leavers this year due to an administrative change in Lower Saxony, the University of Göttingen again had a consistently high demand for admissions, which has restricted programmes this year," says the Vice-President for Teaching, Learning and Equal Opportunities, Professor Andrea D. Bührmann. "The University of Göttingen remains attractive even in these unusual times and offers suitable digital or hybrid solutions for courses and examinations in all its faculties."

At the beginning of the semester, the largest numbers of new enrolments can be found in the following faculties: Humanities (currently about 770); Business and Economics (currently about 610); Social Sciences (currently about 520); and Biology and Psychology (currently about 500). In the winter semester 2020/2021, the University of Göttingen has again established additional first-year student places in highly sought-after Bachelor's and state-run examination programmes with funding from the Higher Education agreement.
