Admission requirements for the Single Honours MA "Medieval and Renaissance Studies" (78 C)


  • B.A. degree or equivalent degree
  • Verification required of academic performance totalling at least 50 credits in History, German Philology, Latin Philology of the Middle Ages, Latin Philology of the Middle Ages and Early Modern Period, Classical Latin Philology, Medieval and Renaissance Studies or in comparable interdisciplinary oriented mediavistic courses and courses pertaining to the early modern period. Of these 50 credits, 40 credits must have been obtained in the field of (depending on the respective study focus):

  • a) Medieval and Renaissance Studies or in comparable interdisciplinary oriented mediavistic courses and courses pertaining to the Early Modern Period, or

    b) History, including at least 20 credits in History of the Middle Ages or the Early Modern Period, or

    c) German Philology, including at least 20 credits in German Mediavistics, or

    d) Latin Philology, including at least 20 credits in Latin Philology of the Middle Ages and Early Modern Period or Latin Philology of the Middle Ages, or

    e) English Philology, including at least 20 credits in the English language and Philology and Philology of the Middle Ages, or

    f) Art History, including at least 20 credits in Art History of the Middle Ages or Early Modern Period, or

    g) Romance Philology, including at least 20 credits in the Romance Philology of the Middle Ages or Early Modern Period.

    h) Scandinavian Studies or in another subject in the field of literary or cultural science that is clearly related to the Scandinavian speaking region, including academic achievement of at least 18 credits in a Scandinavian language (Danish, Norwegian or Swedish) and 20 credits in the field of Ancient Scandinavian Studies.



Language requirements:


  • For all study foci: Intermediate Latin certificate (verification required by the end of the first year of study at the latest)
  • Additionally for the study foci and the modules of the research area "English Philology (English language and literature of the Middle Ages)": English language skills on level C1 of the CEFR. Applicants shall demonstrate the required English proficiency by earning the minimum required grade on an internationally recognised test. A certificate of proficiency in English must be submitted no later than 30th September (application for winter semester) and no later than 31st March (application for summer semester).
    Applicants whose mother tongue is English or who have spent at least two years studying or working in an English-speaking country during the three years prior to the submission of their admissions application (date received) are exempt from this requirement. Moreover, exemptions apply to applicants who have successfully completed a degree or partial degree programme in the English language (proof required).
  • Additionally for the study foci and the modules of the research area "Romance Philology (Middle Ages and Early Modern Period": Verification of sufficient language skills in at least one of the following languages: French (GER level C1), Italian (GER level B2+), Portuguese (GER level B2+) or Spanish (GER level C1). The evidence of language proficiency must be submitted no later than 30th September (application for winter semester) and no later than 31st March (application for summer semester).
