The University of Göttingen's historical

The University of Göttingen has achieved a good position in the Shanghai Ranking again. In the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2025, it falls in the category of sixth to eleventh place in Germany along with the universities of Frankfurt, Cologne, Mainz, Münster and Tübingen. The ARWU is primarily based on a university’s research performance. Data from more than 2,500 universities worldwide was analysed for this year’s ranking. more…

Dinosaur teeth give glimpse of early Earth’s climate

A previously untapped source of data sheds new light on the climate of the early Earth: fossilized dinosaur teeth show that the atmosphere during the Mesozoic era, between 252 and 66 million years ago, contained far more carbon dioxide than it does today. An international research team at the Universities of Göttingen, Mainz and Bochum made this discovery by analysing oxygen isotopes in tooth enamel. They used a newly developed method that opens up opportunities for research into the Earth's climate history. more…

Good results for the University of Göttingen: in the latest "QS World University Rankings by Subject", Agricultural and Forestry sciences are first in Germany, and 21st worldwide. Development Studies is listed among the top 100 worldwide, and was placed among the top four in Germany. Biology is ranked sixth in Germany, and Theology, Religion & Religious Studies is among the top 13 in Germany. Ancient Studies and Prehistory is among the top twelve in Germany and ranks 51-150 worldwide. more…

Proposal for interim President – special Senate meeting on 5 February 2025

Following the Senate meeting on 22 November 2024, a working group had been working on a timely answer to the question of who should lead the University until the regular election of a new President.
