Evaluation of Annual Employee Reviews
In the period February 2021 to March 31, 2021 we would like to evaluate the the communication and management tool annual employee review for the first time. As a supervisor or employee of the University of Göttingen you can contribute the further development of the annual employee review by completing the questionnaire (approx. 5-10 minutes). You find the questionnaire and further information in the employee portal. You can log in here as usual.



In agreement with the Staff Council (Personalrat), the deadline for carrying out annual reviews in 2021 has been extended until 31 December 2021.
In 2021, we recommend that the annual reviews be conducted as a personal talk in the office (in compliance with all hygiene measures). However, this may be deviated from if
i) both the manager and the employee agree, and
ii) both ensure an absolutely confidential and undisturbed conduct of the discussion (undisturbed room, using headphones, primarily use of Big Blue Button).

In addition to the topics of working tasks, leadership and cooperation, HR development and work-life balance, we would like to ask you to explicitly discuss the challenges that the pandemic poses for your employees in the annual review.

Talking about "Remote Leadership”
On January 25, and Feburary 5, 2021, HR Development will offer you a virtual exchange of experiences on the topic of remote leadership for leaders. We were able to win Prof. Dr. Margarete Boos to design this exchange with us and to enrich its content. In this context, a group of students of Mrs. Boos will conduct a short survey within the framework of a seminar, in which the perceptions of the managers regarding changes in their leadership behavior will be recorded. The survey is intended to help us better understand your needs. We look forward to your numerous participation in the event and the survey. There are two dates to choose. Why must "Annual Employee Reviews" take place?
The "Annual Employee Reviews" are of great importance to leaders, employees and the University.

Superiors and leaders can use this occasion to fix objectives together with their coworker(s). Both can keep track of the realisation and discuss adjustments. Leaders have the chance to get to know the perspective of their coworker(s) and discuss themes which risk to be neglected in the work routine.

Employees get the chance to influence the shape of forthcoming work loads and address personal development-, qualification- and career chances.

As for the University, the annual employee reviews play an important role since they open additional possibilities to improve work conditions and promote the implementation of a culture of mutual and lifelong learning.


How shall Annual Employee Reviews be conducted?
The Annual Employee Reviews shall be conducted in a structured, confidential way; based on mutual respect and appreciation, so to say on "on eye level".

We hereby provide you with some documents, which shall support superiors and employees in the preparation and conduct of the Annual Employee Reviews:

The guideline "Annual Employee Reviews" displays and summarizes all relevant information on the topic. (Additionally you can find the current "Dienstvereinbarung".) As tools for the procedure, we provide a template for taking the minutes and a documentation form. Also, we would like to draw your attention to the work aids, please see the documents „Basics of Communication“, „Conflicts and difficult themes: how to prepare“ or „Addressing Work-Life Balance Themes“.

Whats the nature of the "Annual Employee Review"?
The Annual Employee Review is a personal interview between employee and her/his direct superior within strict adherence to the four eyes principle.

It is mandatory, that it take place once a year.

When will the Annual Employee Reviews at Georg-August-Universität Göttingen be evaluated?

The instrument of the Annual Employee Reviews will be evaluated by HR Development in 2021. This means that managers and employees of the university will receive an online questionnaire, which will be filled out anonymously. The responses will be evaluated by HR Development and, if necessary, further development needs will be derived. If necessary, the results are published within the university.



Origins of the Annual Employee Reviews at Georg-August-Universität Göttingen

The Annual Employee Reviews were established at Georg-August-Universität Göttingen in 2017. The concept had been developed by an expert group under the auspices of the vice president Dr. Holger Schroeter with the support of the representants of the workers´council, the division Gender Equality and the Representatives for Severely Handicapped Persons in collaboration with the faculty representatives.
