Digital Creative Space (DCS)

Designed as an open coworking space and located in the heart of the central campus, in the central library of the State of Lower Saxony and University of Göttingen (SUB), the new DCS will provide students with a new modern learning and working environment. The DCS facilitates both formal and informal learning and intensifies mutual exchange within research-oriented, disciplinary and interdisciplinary communities

Video wall

A 3x3 video wall facilitates presentations in the free middle area, which can be opened to the outside.

Coworking with three “furniture scenarios”

With three different furnishing scenarios, the use and acceptance of group-oriented learning locations beyond the usual ones will be tested:
  • Relaxed working
  • Kitchen table
  • Business lounge

Digital coworking zone

One area of the DCS will be specifically designed and equipped as an experimental laboratory for digitally supported interactive group work:
  • Combination of a multi-touch table and multi-touch monitors
  • Special software for interconnected moderation techniques ...
  • ... that can be extended by the students themselves
  • BYOD: Bring your own device
  • Software for innovative work such as mind mapping, visual thinking and project planning

DCS as a development project

The DCS has deliberately been designed as a development project and experimental area, in which the design leaves enough room for further development of the usage scenarios in collaboration with students and teachers. For this purpose, different “furnishing scenarios” are offered, which are equipped with different digital and analog technologies and offer the possibility to individually design the room and personalize it by means of rotatable room elements.

Overall process of the Digital Creative Space

The concept for the Digital Creative Space was developed iteratively and collaboratively. The reallocation of unspent funds from the project Göttingen Campus QPLUS for 2018 has created the opportunity for the implementation of a prototype:
  1. Workshop on developing ideas with digital learning and teaching enthusiasts
  2. Formulation of a sketch of ideas (Coworking - Video production - Digital LAB)
  3. Needs assessment survey and feedback from student representatives and faculties
  4. World Café with interested students, teachers, the e-learning delegates of the faculties and service institutions to discuss and deepen the feedback:
    • Open spatial working structure between a single cabin and the coworking space
    • Support and self-organization - Community Building
    • Basic infrastructure Software/hardware, bring your own device (BYOD), cloud solution, support concept
    • Media production software/hardware, support concept
  5. Adaptation of the ideas sketch
  6. Development of a prototype for coworking.
