New Publication about Interlinking External Crowds and Internal Employees via Digital Platforms in the Journal MIS Quarterly Executive (MISQE)

About the study: A new article about work conducted via digital platforms has been published in the current issue 1/2021 (March 2021) of the international journal "Management Information Systems Quarterly Executive" (MISQE). The article with the title "How Companies Can Benefit from Interlinking External Crowds and Internal Employees" deals with the question how companies can efficiently utilize this novel, hybrid from of work organization via crowdworking platforms as intermediaries. The main focus of this article is on the question of a close interlinking of external crowds and internal employees of a company and the potential to thereby increase agility, quality, and speed of product development. It also shows how companies can exploit the advantages and mitigate the disadvantages of each respective form (work done via external crowds or internal employees alone) via this hybrid work. Based on the work system framework (WSF) as analysis and structuring instrument, the article names 15 possible advantages and 9 (potential) disadvantages of this hybrid form of work organization, explains four specific variants of interlinking external crowds and internal employees, and delivers five main recommendations for company executives for the application of this instrument. One important insight in this paper is that, especially when it comes to complex work, a close interlinking of external crowds and internal employees of an organization offers huge advantages and significantly increases the likelihood of a successful work processing.
