Opencast
Opencast is an open-source video management platform. The service is provided through an extension in Stud.IP. In this "OPENCAST extension," you have access to all functions of the infrastructure. Here you can...
- ...upload/delete media,
- record videos/schedule recordings,
- set security preferences,
- search for videos,
- allow students to upload media,
- edit videos using the online editor.
Here you will find information to help you get started. An online Stud.IP help is also available.
The user interface essentially consists of three components:
- Stud.IP Plugin
- OPENCAST STUDIO
- OPENCAST Video Editor
The Stud.IP plugin provides you with access to the new function and brings together all parts of the OPENCAST interface. Through this, you can start OPENCAST STUDIO and record new media within the course context. In addition to OPENCAST STUDIO, the video editor is available through the functions of each video.

As a first step, activate the new function "Opencast" in the "More..." section of the course:
This creates a new section in the Stud.IP course, and after activation, Opencast appears as a new tab:
Before you can upload your first media file in Stud.IP in the Opencast section, you must first create a "New Series." You can find the corresponding option on the displayed page under "Configuration" in the sidebar:
All media files belonging to a course (can) are collected in the series you create.
After the series has been created, you can begin uploading your first media file to the server. You can either upload an existing file or create a new recording using OPENCAST STUDIO:
Upload media: New videos can be uploaded.

Record video: New videos can be recorded using OPENCAST STUDIO.
After uploading, the availability of the file may take some time. This can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours, depending on the length and size of the video file.
After successful encoding and processing of the media file, it will be displayed in the Opencast section in Stud.IP:
- Break link: The link between the series and the course is broken.
- Hide tab: The tab is not visible to course participants.
- Disable downloads: Media files cannot be downloaded.
- Allow students to upload: Students can upload media files themselves.
- Make new videos visible only to instructors: Videos are visible only to instructors after upload. This also applies to videos uploaded by students.
- Technical feedback: The email program opens automatically with the support email address pre-filled.
- Video visible to participants: Change visibility settings (invisible, visible, share):
- Video editor: The video editor opens in a new window.
- Media download: The video can be selected for download in various quality levels:
- Remove: The video is deleted.
Media can be recorded very easily with OPENCAST Studio without installing additional software. You have three options for which sources you want to record:
- • Screen
- • Screen & Camera
- • Camera
You can also influence recording quality:
You can also select which microphone to use. Finally, you start the recording by pressing the red button. In all three recording modes, the audio can be recorded optionally.
You can check the recording strength based on the intensity of the waveform, allowing you to detect overloads or a too-quiet audio level before starting the recording.
- Trim: The trimming function allows you to remove parts of the video. This can be at the beginning, end, or middle. Removed parts can be deleted, and the remaining parts can be reassembled.
- Metadata: Here you can edit the video's metadata:
- Tracks: For recordings with multiple tracks, individual tracks can also be deleted.
- Finish: Here you can save your editing, finalize it, and start or cancel the conversion.
