Mobile Learning with Actionbound

Actionbound is an app for location-based mobile learning. With this app, various contents can be prepared as a learning tour. Students can follow a route and visit different stations where QR codes can be scanned with a smartphone, questions answered, or short media content displayed to solve tasks and receive further directions. They can acquire knowledge directly at the object or deepen their existing theoretical knowledge.

Why use Actionbound?

With Actionbound, learning tours can be created at practical, relevant locations. The app facilitates learning directly at the object, allowing students to apply their theoretical knowledge immediately. Printed materials are no longer required, and guidance and supervision by instructors are not strictly necessary for well-prepared learning tours. Apps like Actionbound enable meaningful use of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets in university studies.

How do I use Actionbound?

Learning tours with Actionbound are suitable for independent content acquisition in a practical context. The app allows instructors to offer various learning materials (text, images, videos, audio, and questions) digitally at a location as a tour. These can be provided alongside the course or for preparation.

The order of stations can be predefined and even enforced using the software. Knowledge checks via multiple-choice or single-choice questions are also possible at this stage.

Functionality of Actionbound

Actionbound is suitable for...

...various types of learning tours. Here are some examples:

  • Tour through the university collection
  • Tours through the library, specifically focused on a particular subject area
  • Orientational and exploration tours for first-year students
  • Provision of materials for excursions
  • Independent student work followed by discussion of results
  • Providing background information on objects (statues, buildings, etc.)
  • Historical tours with images showing how a particular location looked at a specific time
  • Excursions with a large number of students to support self-organized excursions
  • Tour for introducing students to experimental setups or the functioning of equipment
  • ...and many more!

What pitfalls should I be aware of?

Content and media for learning tours should be carefully selected and should not exceed a certain volume to avoid overwhelming learners. For changing content, updates should be scheduled. Voluntary learning tours should be designed to be interesting and varied to motivate students to use them for self-study.

How do I create a learning tour? / Where can I get help?

Instructors can register at www.actionbound.de. Unfortunately, we can no longer provide a university license at this time. An overview of possible licenses can be found here: https://de.actionbound.com/license/uni/1. You can then create tours (so-called Bounds) via the website. No programming knowledge is required. Here you will find a detailed guide.

Of course, we can advise and train you on the specific implementation. Please contact us at elearning@uni-goettingen.de and feel free to check out our training offerings.
