Kialo Edu
“Education is not about memorizing facts, but about training the mind!”
Critical thinking is a key competency that enables individuals to gather information, evaluate it, and verify it—asking themselves: “Is this true? What supports it, and what opposes it?”
With Kialo Edu, students learn to train their critical thinking and engage in constructive discussions.
Kialo Edu is being tested as part of the Co³Learn consortium project at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, Leibniz Universität Hannover, and Technische Universität Braunschweig. What is Kialo Edu and how can I use it?
Kialo Edu is a tool designed to visualize arguments and discussions with the goal of teaching and fostering critical thinking. Participants can engage in constructive dialogue, collect arguments, and weigh them against each other.
Students can join a discussion without registration if the discussion is shared with instant access enabled. They can also register without providing an email address. We recommend allowing students to choose a name that does not fully disclose personal data but still allows you to identify them if needed.
Possible Use Cases
Online Discussions
With Kialo Edu, students can collaboratively conduct online discussions by collecting and weighing arguments for and against a given thesis or topic. Discussions are displayed in a tree diagram with interconnected pro and con arguments. The tree structure helps clarify the logical flow of reasoning, untangle argumentation threads, and compare the strength of individual arguments.
Preparing Written Assignments
Kialo Edu can also be used to structurally prepare the argumentation for a written assignment.
