Consensus Paper of the DGK, DGTHG, and DGAI on "Ethical Aspects in the Context of Extracorporeal Life Support Systems (ECLS)"
On August 23, 2024, the German Society of Cardiology (DGK), in collaboration with the German Society for Thoracic, Cardiac, and Vascular Surgery (DGTHG) and the German Society of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (DGAI), published a consensus paper on the ethical aspects related to extracorporeal life support systems (ECLS).
In this consensus paper, the authors, including Prof. Dr. Duttge, emphasize the significance of ECLS systems, which are used for temporary, life-saving support in severe cardiovascular conditions. The paper particularly highlights ethical challenges such as decision-making under time pressure, patient consent, prognosis assessment, and the psychological and physical burdens on patients, their families, and the healthcare team. Additionally, the paper presents solutions and future perspectives for the ethical management of ECLS.
Prof. Dr. Duttge was not only a co-author of this consensus paper, but his numerous publications also served as essential references. For example, his article "Advance Care Planning at the End of Life from a Legal Perspective," published in the German Medical Weekly in 2023, was cited as one of the sources for the consensus paper.
