Research Project

  • Analysis of Farm-Level Efficiency, Production Risk and Risk Preferences for Cassava Farmers in South-West Nigeria

Cassava´s multiple uses have facilitated greater utilization in Nigeria. It is central to the rural economy in the country. With the competing demand for cassava from both domestic and international markets (mostly from China, South Africa, United States of America, and European Union), the crucial question is whether the production potential is fully utilized and capable of meeting the growing demand in the country and internationally. And to answer this question is to investigate effect of optimal input choice on cassava output supplies in Nigeria. Because, studies have shown that optimal input utilizations at farm level have significant implication for output supplies (Pope and Kramer (1979), Love and Buccola (1991)). Likewise other studies have found out that agricultural input demands depend on a number of factors, key of which include production risk, production efficiency of the farmer, and farmer’s ability to take risk (Kumbhakar (2002), Serra et al. (2008)). Therefore, there is need to carry out a joint investigation of production risk, farm-level efficiency, and risk preferences with respect to input demand function in reference to cassava farmers in Nigeria, which is the motivation behind this study. Based on this, the empirical production efficiency framework will be generalized to accommodate production risk and the farmer’s attitude towards risk, since pronouncement of economists are often based on models such as the traditional stochastic frontier models which assumes perfect certainty in estimating farm level efficiency. These pronouncements in most cases do not survive the incorporation of uncertainty which will have implications for agricultural policy aimed at improving cassava production in Nigeria.
