Situation

Equality1
In Göttingen, women make up 72% of biology graduates and 48% of PhD students, but drop out significantly after the postdoc stage. 33% of the GönomiX PIs are female—this is above the average in biology but still unsatisfying.

The RTG is highly international, with 44% international PIs and 57% international PhD students currently being enrolled in our graduate school.

Key Measures

Given that there is a good gender balance at the PhD level, we strive to address gender imbalance at the critical postdoc-to-PI transition stage. To that end, we aim to hire at least one female postdoc or a candidate from an underrepresented group and support their transition to a PI role possibly within the RTG. Our pioneering projects offer cutting-edge qualifications and opportunities for high-impact publications for the hired postdoc.
Mentorship from experienced PIs and participation in the University Dorothea Schlözer program to foster female researchers and the Campus Postdoc Network will further support career growth of persons from underrepresented groups.
Family-friendly policies include scheduling within childcare hours, childcare support for events, and funding for student helpers for persons with care responsability.
The coordinator will proactively address individual care needs, ensuring an inclusive and supportive environment.
While data on other underrepresented groups is sadly lacking, we promote inclusive recruitment via diverse committees and careful language. We specifically offer guidance for first-generation academics, drawing on experience from the university’s “Brückenschlag” project.
