Carmenes: 59 new planets discovered in four years

In four years, observations by the international Carmenes Project have led to the discovery of 59 exoplanets, a dozen of which are potentially habitable. The scientists have published the data from around 20,000 observations they made between 2016 and 2020 for a sample of 362 nearby cool stars. The project, with the participation of the University of Göttingen, uses an instrument from the Calar Alto Observatory in southern Spain.

Navigation on the high seas

He was director of the first university observatory in Göttingen: Tobias Mayer, famous astronomer and cartographer. Mayer was born 300 years ago on February 17, 1723 in Marbach am Neckar, where he grew up in modest circumstances. His talent for mathematics and science was evident at an early age, and throughout his life he became widely known for his pioneering work in astronomy, mathematics and cartography.

Academic field for the future: "Matter to Life”

Göttingen and Heidelberg Universities will in future offer a joint Master's degree in the interdisciplinary pro-gramme "Matter to Life". Göttingen University President Professor Metin Tolan and the Rector of Heidelberg University, Professor Bernhard Eitel, signed an agreement to this effect yesterday in Göttingen. This kind of programme and degree are unique in Germany. Built on the approach of the Max Planck School Matter to Life: to identify the world's best early career researchers in this new field.

European Championship with side effects

The impact of the European Soccer (Football) Championship 2020 on the incidence of the Corona pandemic differed a lot among the participating countries. The extent to which the numbers of infections and deaths from COVID-19 increased depended primarily on the initial situation. This was determined by physicists in an analysis of the epidemiological data. The study involved the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization in Göttingen, the Max Planck Institute for Physics in Munich, as well as the Universities of Bonn and Göttingen and the PUNCH4NFDI consortium in the national research data infrastructure.

Dies Physicus

In the second half of 2022, 31 students completed a bachelor's degree and 29 a master's degree. Prizes were awarded to Fee Jasmin Salome Kappert (prize for best master’s graduate, Dr. Berliner-Dr. Ungewitter Foundation), Dr. Daniel Härtter (doctoral award, Jan-Peter-Toennies Foundation), Dr. Jack Parley (doctoral award, Dr. Berliner-Dr. Ungewitter Foundation) and Prof. Dr. Reiner Kree (Robert Wichard Pohl Medal for outstanding teaching in physics).

Rishabh Jha receives DAAD award for outstanding international students

PhD student Rishabh Jha from India has received this year's German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Award for Outstanding International Students. Jha is studying for his doctorate at the Faculty of Physics at the University of Göttingen on the theoretical modelling of unusual metals that defy established theories. The jury recognised his exceptional academic achievements as well as his commitment as a tutor and to supervising international students.
