Forestry in Germany + (M.Sc.) (700319)

Description

The module "Forestry in Germany +" serves as a practical consolidation of the module "Forestry in Germany (700093)".

A one-week bus excursion (7 to 8 students + 1 lecturer) provides in-depth insights into forest planning, forest management and forest use in Germany. Different forest management concepts and the whole range of forest communities from the planar to the high montane zone will be presented. The historical development of forests and forest use, the current challenges for forestry and forest protection in the face of dramatic forest damage caused by climate change and calamities, and the tension between commercial forests and nature conservation will also be discussed using the Harz National Park as an example.                                                                               Among others, visits to the forest planning office in Wolfenbüttel, the forestry office in Bad Lauterberg, the national park administration Harz in Wernigerode, the research museum in Schöningen and the paper mill in Herzberg are planned.

Learning objectives and competences

During this field trip, students will deepen their understanding of the German forestry system through additional field trips to different regions of Germany and by applying learned forest management, inventory, and research techniques to a small case study. Students will be able to take an interdisciplinary perspective and critically evaluate current discussions about forestry in Germany.
